2nd Grand Slam :-( / new Poll / Anna and Enrique will marry???
Roland Garros is ongoing right now - but Anna isn't there :-((( this is the sad reality! Well, hopefully she'll be back at approx. 1 1/2 weeks when the grass court season starts in Birmingham (GBR) - it would be Anna's first time she plays this WTA event!

new Poll: Anna withdrew from Roland Garros, the 2nd Grand Slam of the Year! What can we "expect" from the upcoming grass court season (Birmingham, Eastbourne, Wimbledon)???
Also have a look at the outcome of the last poll:

Well, I think Anna would have won at least 1 Challenger if she would have played fully healthy!

Anna and Enrique will marry???: It's THE SUN - just read it and well, believe it or not. Full story

2nd Grand Slam :-( / Ranking News / Site Updates / Sergei talks about former Marriage
Roland Garros is ongoing right now - but Anna isn't there :-((( this is the sad reality! Well, hopefully she'll be back at approx. 1 1/2 weeks when the grass court season starts in Birmingham (GBR) - it would be Anna's first time she plays this WTA event!

Ranking News: Anna lost 1 more spot in Singles - 79th ranked with unchanged points! In Doubles, Anna remains ranked 30th with unchanged points as well. In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is still ranked outside the Singles Top 100 and in Doubles no changes as well (34th with Chanda Rubin and unchanged 151 points)!

Site Updates: Sorry but due to personal problems since a few days there MIGHT be a (small) lack of updates in the near future. Perhaps I will be able to maintain my normal update level - just an information for you!

Sergei talks about former Marriage: Didn't you expect that??? - I did! Sergei Fedorov answered questions about his marriage with Anna for the MAXIM magazine. Read more

NO ROLAND GARROS FOR ANNA / FHM "Sexiest Woman in the World 2003" / BILD readers pro Anna
Roland Garros will take place - but Anna won't be there due to these neverending injuries (it really seems so). That's what she said in her latest Journal Entry: "Unfortunately, I'm not yet match fit and won't be ready to play Roland Garros in Paris"!!!! According to various reports (for example BBC) she still has this abductor muscle problem in her left thigh...! Was it wrong to play Charlottesville after she had to withdraw before the Semifinal in Sea Island??? It seems so! Honestly, I didn't think that this injury would be SO serious...!
At least one positive notice - Quote Anna: "I'm looking forward to playing on grass (my favorite surface!) at Birmingham, Eastbourne and Wimbledon."
But Clay Court season 2003 is definitely over for Anna - without having won 1 match at a WTA Tournament :-(((((

FHM "Sexiest Woman in the World 2003": Last year Anna won this world wide voting but this year she "just" finished 8th! Well, there are MUCH more important things for Anna for sure.

BILD readers pro Anna: BILD published the results of the "Who is prettier?"-Poll (Maria Sharapova vs Anna) and Anna is still (slightly) the favorite of the users - 51,5% voted PRO Anna.

PERSONAL COMMENT: I don't think Sharapova is very pretty - I really cannot compare her with Anna's outstanding Beauty! But according to this close result it seems that most of the guys find Maria VERY attractive!

Roland Garros to come / Montreal02-video / Wertheim about Anna / Anna and Enrique SOO hungry???
Roland Garros, the 2nd Grand Slam of the Year, is about to start. The Singles Main Draw will be announced most likely on Friday, May 23!

PERSONAL COMMENT: On the one hand I hope Anna won't draw such a strong opponent but on the other hand I am asking myself: "What can we expect from Anna, no matter who her 1st Round opponent will be???" post your opinions

Montreal02-video: You can download a video of Anna at the Rogers AT&T Cup from last year where Anna performs at a Tennis clinic. Quicktime | MPEG movie

Wertheim about Anna: Jon Wertheim (writing for Sports Illustrated) made his comments about Anna's "back to the roots"-attempt at Sea Island and Charlottesville. In the end he just had to say that Anna is at "dire crossroads" - more

Anna and Enrique SOO hungry???: According to the Miami Herald, Enrique and Anna were at China Grill on May 14, seemingly happy, and hungry, ordering enough food for four, including lobster pancakes, tempura sashimi, Kobe beef and lacquered duck.

PERSONAL COMMENT: Rumour-time I guess...! Anyway - offcourt-stuff nobody really needs!

NO ANNA this week... / Ranking News
Anna doesn't play in Strasbourg - look at the Main Draw at wtaworld.com or at the official Tournament Website (when they update it)! I am frustrated and I don't understandt it - what kind of Roland Garros-preparation is that??? Not ONE single match played on red clay!!!! That's all I have to say about that!

Anna, I was so happy about going to Strasbourg but now you won't be there - and so I won't as well...! It was so wonderful last year...!

Ranking News: Ranking Reality is just frustrating for Anna...and for us fans - once again she lost 8 positions (no wonder, she reached the 3rd Round in Rome 52 weeks ago) in Singles and is just ranked 78th :-((( In Doubles she also lost 1 additional spot - 30th right now! In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna's name still doesn't appear in the Singles Top100 and in Doubles she lost 1 spot - ranked 34th with Chanda Rubin and unchanged points (151)!

More news about Charlottesville / no SB / new Poll
More news about Anna's dramatic 1st Round-exit at Charlottesville ($25000-Challenger tournament) 2 days ago: Burna Colosio was injured as well - massive double blister on big toe! But Anna was also hampered by this nagging thigh injury! She painfully said during the match "MY LEG", looking at Harold Solomon :-((((( dailyprogress.com-articles

Everything is just so sad...

no SB: It isn't confirmed yet but I am convinced that this is just a matter of time (hours)! Anna WON'T play in Strasbourg next week, so I won't be able to see her again - I was so happy that I got this opportunity...! The dailyprogress.com-article state that Anna flew back to Miami to prepare for Roland Garros straight after her defeat

new Poll: Anna's comeback-attempt at ITF Challengers is over - 3 wins, 1 horrible 1st Round-defeat! What do you think about that? Is this the ultimate beginning of the end of her Pro career? Was it just bad injury luck once again?? VOTE!

Outcome of the last poll:

Well, I wish the majority was right and Anna would have won at least 1 of the 2 Challengers...! But NO - she's still hampered by the left thigh injury :-((((

Anna lost in Challenger 1st Round!!!
I write this in black&white to show (once again) my frustration - to make it quick: Anna LOST vs Bruna Colosio (ranked 384th!!!!!!!!!) 2:6,7:6,4:6! Anna didn't manage to hold her serve in the final set and lost 12 of 15 service games. After this defeat (for me the worst one since the US Open2002-Widjaja-desaster) she blew off the mandatory postmatch news conference - no surprise for me! report

PERSONAL COMMENT: Wasn't her thigh injury fully healed yet? Was Anna just playing with pain in her leg just to get some match practise before Roland Garros in 1 1/2 weeks?
I DO NOT KNOW - all I know is that this was Anna's first-ever ITF 1st Round-exit since I know her (since 3.9.1996) - I don't find words to describe my sadness! Right now I think even Strasbourg next week would be a too strong field for her :-(((((

Anna playing TODAY / Anna joins new XBOX game
GREAT - Anna is playing this week in Charlottesville so her Withdrawal in Sea Island on May 10 was just the right precautionary measure I guess! Anna is playing her 1st Round match already TODAY vs Burna Colosio from Brazil (ranked 384th), a player who played Qualifying! Anna is seeded 1st in this Challenger tournament! See the Charlottesville Main Draw | Today's Full schedule

Court 3 - Matches start at 9:30am local (3:30pm CET)

Wheeler vs Volekova
Jackson vs Okamoto
Kalvaria vs Osterloh
Kournikova vs Colosio

I assume that Anna's match starts at approx. 1:00-2:30pm local (7:00-8:30pm CET)! In the Semifinal Anna may face Christina Wheeler - at last year's Roland Garros Anna lost vs her in 2 straight sets!!!!

Anna joins new XBOX-game: Anna will be one of many tennis athletes who join the new video game called "Top Spin", exclusively made for Microsoft's XBOX! Read more

What now? / Ranking News / BILD about the "new Anna"
Anna, what's going on this week? A small journal-entry would be nice. Does anybody know if Anna will be playing this week in Charlottesville? Elsewhere?! How serious is her left thigh injury? Is there a chance that she'll play in Strasbourg next week?
IF so, I will be there on monday and most likely on tuesday as well (depends on my working circumstances)!

Ranking News: Anna slightly moved up in Singles Ranking by 2 spots - 70th with 516 points! In Doubles Anna fell down 1 spot and is now ranked 29th in the world (unchanged points)! In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is still ranked outside the Singles Top100 and in Doubles she remains ranked 33th with
Source is wtatour.com: Singles | Doubles | Race to...-Singles & -Doubles

BILD about the "new Anna": In today's printed version german's daily newspaper BILD talks about Maria Sharapova (16) as the "new Anna"! She also lives in Florida and she also comes from Russia! Plus: She has just won Sea Island - and both would have met in the semis if Anna wouldn't have been forced to withdraw due to injury!

PERSONAL COMMENT: For me, it doesn't matter anymore if they talk about Maria Sharapova or anyone else of the youngsters (Harkleroad for example) - ANNA is the one who is and always will be UNIQUE for me. Once again: This is just MY opinion.

QF-win but Withdrawal then / Anna, the Person / SB-hope
Anna did win vs Rao 6-3,6-3 but only with her left thigh wrapped. Just before her Semifinal vs Sharapova she was forced to withdraw!

PERSONAL COMMENT: I really don't know anymore what to say about these neverending injuries... :-(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Anna, the Person: Great ESPN article! You really get to know Anna a little bit better! She's nice, she's surfing the web (laughing about rumours written in the Community Area of Enrique's official Website), she's talking about the zinc oxide etc.! VERY interesting and you see that Anna is just a wonderful normal young woman :-)

SB-hope: "I need to play as many matches as I can" (quote Anna from yesterday) - will she be playing at Strasbourg like last year in 1 1/2 weeks??? HOPEFULLY. It would be a logical step and I think it only depends on staying healthy! If she will be playing there, I will be there, too :-)))))

May 9, 2003
Anna's 2nd Win / Fr-Schedule / Charlottesville
GREAT ANNA - 2 wins in a row already! Anna beat Volekova easily in just 1 hour 6:0,6:2 :-))))) Anna just lost 7 points in the 1st set and said afterwards: "I just felt comfortable the whole match". More Interview-cuts
Now Anna will meet Sunitha Rao in the Quarterfinal later today (more infos to come)!

Fr-schedule: Take a look at today's schedule:

Stadium Court - start 10am local (4:00pm CET)

Frazier vs Wheeler
Brandi vs Sharapova
Rao vs Kournikova

So I assume that Anna's match starts approx. at 1:00-2:00pm local (7:00-8:00pm CET)! Good luck Anna - hopefully there will be a clash Anna vs Maria Sharapova in the semis!

Charlottesville: According to this article Anna has confirmed to play the next $25.000-Challenger tournament next week at Charlottesville - the Boyd Tinsley Championships! Main Draw will begin on tuesday, May 13.

May 8, 2003
Anna WON :-))) / 2nd Rd vs Volekova / Tennis-picnic???
Anna did win a Singles match again, her first Singles victory since January 13 (6-1,6-2 vs Nagyova at Aussie Open)! Anna beat Maria Fernanda Alves 4-6,6-4,3-0 (Alves retired due to a left thigh injury)! Anna started rusty but came back from 1-4 down in the 1st set to 4-5! She also argued several line calls and was even given a WARNING FOR DELAY OF GAME at 5-4 in the 2nd set (Anna: "I'm scared!"). About the whole match: "It's not the best match I've played"! Regarding her preparation plans for Roland Garros in about 2 weeks: "I need to play as many matches as I can."
more Interview-cuts | report

2nd Rd vs Volekova: Anna now faces Gabriela Volekova TODAY in the 2nd Round in Sea Island, most likely in the evening as yesterday against Alves!

Tennis-picnic???: According to bild.de (Sports Section (picture proof obviously)) Anna was busy with her discman and a little toy during the injury break from Alves!

PERSONAL COMMENT: Well, IF that is true and Anna was playing with her discman and this toy during an injury break I think there will be a logical explanation because I really don't doubt Anna's commitment to Tennis at all! Why? Just ask yourself: Why should Anna be playing these VERY SMALL "under WTA"-Tournaments if not because of Tennis and getting match practise???

May 7, 2003
Anna vs M.F.Alves TODAY
Anna vs Maria Fernanda Alves (BRA) TODAY at 5:00pm (according to this article)! If Anna wins this comeback-match she will face Volekova in the 2nd round (she did beat McShea 7:5,6:0)! Full Main Draw

May 6, 2003
Anna vs M.F.Alves / Focus on Challenger / Ranking News
The Main Draw for The Cloister Cup (Sea Island) is out and Anna faces Maria Fernanda Alves (BRA) on Wednesday (May 7), 5:00pm (according to this article)! Interesting: This tournament She might face Maria Sharapova in the semis - a game Anna shouldn't lose but first of all she has to win a few matches! Full Main Draw

Focus on Challenger: Anna confirmed to play this $25K-Challenger at Sea Island and what did the organizers decide? They restricted the access to this Resort where the tournament takes place! In addition to that nearly everything had to be renewed: Security, media accreditations etc.! Read more

Ranking News: Anna's Singles Ranking got even worse this week (obviously because she played 52 weeks ago) - 72th in Singles (-5 positions) but at least still 28th ranked in Doubles with unchanged points! In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is still ranked below the Singles Top100 this year and in Doubles she lost 1 additional position - ranked 33th with Chanda Rubin and unchanged 151 points!

Sea Island-Challenger coming... / new Poll
An ITF spokesman said yesterday: "As of today, Kournikova is still in the draw and will be playing at Sea Island on monday." full article

PERSONAL COMMENT: Incredible sad to read that she's "no longer considered a serious title contender on the WTA Tour"! Unfortunately it's the truth and finally Anna seemed to have realized that she needs to change something. It wouldn't make much sense for her to play at a Tier I-tournament after having won just 1 Singles match so far this year!!!

new Poll: Anna starts the ultimate comeback by going back to ITF Challengers...! What do you think about that??!

The outcome of the last poll:

Unfortunately it is possible that Anna will never reach her full potential and with all her injury bad luck...

Sea Island-Challenger next / Bali
It still seems that Anna plans to return to competitive Tennis next week at Sea Island, The Cloister Cup ($25K-Challenger). At the updated Main Draw Entry List Anna is now seeded 2nd behind Amy Frazier.

Well, I guess that Anna, IF she really plans to play again next week, decided to play the $25K-Challenger instead of Berlin's Tier I-Event just because of one main reason: Match practise! It is simply more realistic that she wins a few matches at a small tournament like this $25K-Challenger than at a Tier I-Tournament! In a few days we will know!

Bali: "We talked with Kournikova and her agent during the Nasdaq tournament in Florida about three weeks ago and she confirmed she would play in Bali" - that's what Bali's tournament director Kevin Livesey told a media conference on wednesday!

Well, no "real" big news and I think we'll just have to wait and see whether she will play in Indonesia (Sep 8-14, 2003) or not!
