Ranking News / what will happen???
As of July 28 Anna's big downfall definitely started :-((((( This is just logical because Stanford and San Diego were Anna's most successful tournaments beside Shanghai in September (reached Final) in 2002!!!!! Therefore she loses 13 spots in Singles and is now ranked 89th! In Doubles she went down as well - 70th with just 514 points left! I think next week she will already be ranked beyond the Top 100 in Singles :-(((((((((((
In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is ranked far outside the Singles Top 100 and in Doubles 2 spots down as well - 49th with 151 points (together with Chanda Rubin)!

what will happen???: Anna won't play any Hardcourt tournament this summer due to her neverending chronic back injury! I am very depressed and sad because deep in my heart my biggest fear is more alive than ever: WILL SHE BE FORCED TO RETIRE DUE TO INJURY VERY SOON??? Her Rankings are falling down and in a few weeks she will be ranked as low as when she entered the tour in the end of 1995!!!! Incredible!
Honestly, I really don't know if Anna will be able come back to the Top where she once was - I hope she will but the hope gets smaller with every single day she's sidelined due to injury!

Anna out of US Open / MAXIM-comments as Audio
This is no real surprise anymore - Anna withdrew from this year's final Grand Slam, the US Open :-(((( This means that she will miss the year's final Grand Slam for the 3rd time already (after 1999 and 2001)! This makes me damn sad but after her Withdrawals from Stanford, San Diego and Toronto this step was predictable. report
Hopefully Anna will be able to play Tennis 100% healthy as soon as possible.

In Doubles nothing changed - still ranked 60th with 604 points! In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is still ranked outside the Singles Top 100 and in Doubles she remains ranked 47th (together with Chanda Rubin) and unchanged points (151)!

Anna played again :-) / What now?
Despite hurting her left ankle Anna was able to play again vs St. Louis Aces - this time in Kansas City. She played Women's Doubles & Mixed Doubles :-)! In Women's Doubles Anna lost 2-5 but she won in Mixed Doubles 5-4!

What now?: Anna finished her 3-day World Team Tennis-tour and will now step back to rehabilitation program for her injured back I think. As we all now she has withdrawn from upcoming tournaments in Stanford, San Diego and Toronto. It is also uncertain if Anna will play in this year's US Open at the end of August...

Anna plays World Team Tennis!!! / new Poll / Anna in new MAXIM
Anna published her latest Journal Entry on her official Website! Unfortunately she didn't give a deeper insight into her back injury, her recovery and treatment plans, her further tournament schedule etc.! She just says that she will be "playing World TeamTennis for the Kansas City Explorers"! The schedule:

TOMORROW, July 17: Kansas City Explorers vs St. Louis Aces  (Location: St.Louis)

PERSONAL COMMENT: Anna, why didn't you say anything about your serious injury?!?!?!?!

new Poll: Anna decided to play World Team Tennis! Will that be good for her sore back?!?!?! VOTE!
Outcome of the last poll:

Well, now she plays World Team Tennis although she withdrew from tournaments up to 4 weeks in advance - a little bit strange I think

Anna in new MAXIM: Anna will be featured in the upcoming MAXIM August 2003-Magazine (US issue)! I will post pics as soon as possible!

Chance for US Open??? / Anna at Philadelphia for WTT / Ranking News
On Monday Anna's agent, Phil Depicciotto, informed organisers of Stanford and San Diego that Anna won't play these events but, at a least a slim ray of of light at the end of the tunnel: "if she's feeling better, (she) may ask for a wild card into New Haven" (week before US Open)! Anna has a CHRONIC SPRAIN OF THE LUMBAR SPINE (inoperable :-((((( ) and "unless there is a marked improvement, her schedule will remain uncertain" (quote Depicciotto).
Anna will be playing this week for the Kansas City Explorers (World Team Tennis) and after that "she'll know a lot better how she feels" (quote Depicciotto)! More from Anna's agent

Anna at Philadelphia for WTT: Anna is playing for the Kansas City Explorers and on Wednesday, July 16, they are scheduled to play vs the Philadelphia Freedoms! As far as I know, Anna is still expected to play Doubles and Mixed Doubles! This event will take place at Cabrini College in Radnor, PA! Complete World Team Tennis-schedule

Ranking News: As of July 14 Anna is ranked 1 spot better in Singles than last week - 77th ranked with unchanged points! In Doubles nothing changed as well (60th ranked) but Anna has 2 points gained! in the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings no changes as well: Anna's still ranked outside the Singles Top 100 and in Doubles she's still ranked 47th together with Chanda Rubin and unchanged points (151)!

Anna playing Doubles and Mixed this week at WTT!?!?!?!
According to this article from stltoday.com Anna will be playing Doubles and Mixed Doubles for the Kansas City Explorers (World Team Tennis) this Thursday in St. Louis! World Team Tennis-schedule | All players for the Kansas City Explorers-Team

Well, Anna did withdraw from ALL US-Hardcourt-tournaments including the US Open, didn't she??? So Anna, WHY don't you just fulfill your promotional obligations and that's it?? Do you really think that playing there would be good for your sore back???

July 12, 2003
ANNA NOT PLAYING THIS SUMMER / new Poll
Anna won't play any tournament this summer, including the US OPEN at the end of August! Read more! According to OCT_1 Anna is expected to give a Journal Update on her official website during the next 1 or 2 days - hopefully Anna will explain what her treatment plans are!

PERSONAL COMMENT: After she withdrew from Toronto 3 days ago this is no surprise! Obviously Anna wants her back injury to heal completely and this seems to take several months. HOPEFULLY this doesn't end in retirement. I think that her next Journal Update is VERY VERY important. She must say something about her future plans as a Tennis Pro...

new Poll: Anna withdrew from ALL U.S. Hardcourt tournaments, including the US Open (the last Grand Slam 2003) :-(((( Why did she do that?? What might be the reasons? VOTE!
Outcome of last poll:

Personally I also think that Anna will try EVERYTHING to come back

TORONTO-WITHDRAWAL - 2003 over??? / Rankings & Regulations / Video-Announcement / Anna & Mark-rumour / Anna in ESPN's Final Four
Anna already withdrew from the Rogers AT&T Cup in Toronto which takes place from August 11-17, 2003 - 1 MONTH BEFORE THE START OF TOURNAMENT!!!! report
Quote: "I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete in Toronto next month." This means nothing else than
- NO WORLD TEAM TENNIS
- NO STANFORD (Bank of the West Classic)
- NO SAN DIEGO (Acura Classic)
- NO LOS ANGELES (JP Morgan Chase Open)

Is this already the end for 2003 or even for her whole Pro career??? Anna, LET US KNOW IN A JOURNAL UPDATE. PLEASE

PERSONAL COMMENT: This is the end I fear! Anna back in 2004??? Right now I know nothing anymore and I really don't know what to think anymore :-((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((

Rankings & Regulations: Right now I just want to talk about comeback theories, how WTA regulations might help Anna regarding her Ranking etc.!
First of all, Anna played her last match on May 14 in Charlottesville vs Colosio. Although this Tournament was just an ITF Tournament (below WTA-level) points gained out of those type of lower-level tournaments also count for the players' World Ranking position! If Anna cannot play for 6 months at least she will get an injury protected Special Ranking - this would be November 14, 2003! At this point, the current season is already over! If so, Anna would get this Special Ranking (70th) for 8 tournaments (1 Grand Slam) in a period of 12 months!
In fact, Anna doesn't need this Special Ranking because most likel she'll be given Gold Exempt Status also for 2004 and therefore she would receive unlimited Wildcards for any tournament she wants to play (organizers want her to play)!
SUMMARY: Whatever happens - Anna shouldn't be worried about her Singles Rankings Downfall which will start soon (good results in Stanford and San Diego 2002) - she will be able to play the tournaments she wants no matter what her Ranking position will be!

Video-Announcement: Today I decided to create a new video called "Anna's career 96-03"! I expect to finish work by the end of July 2003! More Infos in the Messageboard (> Oncourt-Anna > "Anna's Career 96-03"-Thread)

Anna & Mark-rumour: Remember what was written during the Australian Open 2000??? Anna and Mark Phillipoussis reportedly had a love affair - both denied! Now THIS REPORT came up, reportedly with comments made by Marks former coach, Pat Cash!

PERSONAL COMMENT: Whatever is the truth - I don't care. I just hope that Anna won't be forced to retire due to all these injuries!

Anna in ESPN's Final Four: Is there nothing more important in the world going on worth voting about??? Obviously not. ESPN intiated a "Page 2's Most Overrated Person"-Poll (musicians, athletes-coaches, actors, actresses) and, what a surprise :-(, Anna made it into the Final Four! more

July 8, 2003
Anna not in Stanford???
Anna's name is not listed anymore on the the appearance list at the official Bank of the West Classic-website - I think we all know what this will mean...!
In my opinion she won't play neither World Team Tennis end next week nor Stanford the following week!

Time will tell!

July 7, 2003
Locations of the WTT cities / Ranking News
There is still the BIG question mark if Anna will be playing World Team Tennis in about 10 days or not! Below you can see where the 3 cities are in North America! Anna confirmed to play in Radnor on July 16, in St. Louis on July 17 and in Kansas City on July 18.

Ranking News: As of today, Anna is ranked 78th in Singles with 2 points less than before Wimbledon but what a shocking downfall in Doubles Ranking - Down from 28 to 60 with just 604 points remaining. This is a BIG SHOCK but logical because of her Doubles success 12 months ago (semifinal)! In the "Porsche Race to the Championships"-Rankings Anna is still ranked outside the Singles Top 100 and as a Team with Chanda Rubin she remains ranked 47th with unchanged 151 points!

Anna's comeback at WTT or Stanford? / inoperable injury??? / Anna at the Orient-Express
Anna said in a conference Call on June 23, 2003 that she wants to play again at the World Team Tennis. Exact dates:
- July 16 Radnor, PA (Cabrini College)
- July 17 St.Louis
- July 18 Kansas City
Will she REALLY be healthy enough to try a comeback?!?!?! The other option for her would be to rest at least until the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, CA, USA (July 21-27, 2003)! What do you think?
Hopefully Anna will be back as soon and HEALTHY as possible!

inoperable injury???: I just found this, apparently published on tennisreporters.net: "Her back ailment is considered to be inoperable at this point so she can only hope that it gets better." WHAT??? Does this mean that these back pains never going to become less serious regardless what kind of therapy she tries??? This sounds, once again, very very disappointing and in fact the question must be raised: DOES IT STILL MAKE SENSE, ANNA??? (if this is true of course)

PERSONAL COMMENT: This is so frustrating - Anna doesn't deserve this way her pro career seems to come to a sad end...

Anna at the Orient-Express: Another Omega event for Anna! She was on the Orient-Express train (launch of new Railmaster watch) on June 27-28, 2003! The journey took place from Vienna (AUS) to Prague (CZE) - not such a far distance! Read more
